Vertical Vibration of a Deep Bed of Granular Material in a Container

چکیده
A deep bed of granular material (more than six layers ofparticles) was subjected to sinusoidal, vertical vibrations. Several phenomena were observed depending on the amplitude of excitation. These included heaping, surjCace waves, and arching; the transitions from one state to another involved various dynamic instabilities and bifitrcations. The paper includes a description of these phenomena and the characteristic properties associated with each in addition to measurements of the transitions ,porn one phenomena to another.

Non-Gaussian Velocity Distribution Function in a Vibrating Granular Bed
The simulation of granular particles in a quasi-two-dimensional container under vertical vibration as an experimental accessible model for granular gases is performed. The velocity distribution function obeys an exponential-like function during the vibration and deviates from the exponential function in free-cooling states. It is confirmed that this exponentiallike distribution function is prod...
متن کاملEffects of vertical vibration on hopper flows of granular material
The discharge of granular material from a hopper subject to vertical sinusoidal oscillations was investigated using experiments and discrete element computer simulations. With the hopper exit closed, side-wall convection cells are observed, oriented such that particles move up along the inclined walls of the hopper and down at the center line. The convection cells are a result of the granular b...

We report on experiments to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of packing arrangements of anisotropic, cylindrical granular material, using high-resolution capacitive monitoring. In these experiments, the particle configurations start from an initially disordered, low-packing-fraction state and under vertical vibrations evolve to a dense, highly ordered, nematic state in which the long ...
متن کاملTraffic Equations and Granular Convection
We investigate both numerically and analytically the convective instability of granular materials by two dimensional traffic equations. In the absence of vibrations traffic equations assume two distinctive classes of fixed bed solutions with either a spatially uniform or nonuniform density profile. The former one exists only when the function V (ρ) that monitors the relaxation of grains assumes...

The influence of the surrounding air on the dynamics of fine granular material is becoming an increasingly topical area of research interest. While for large granular particles (diameter > 1 mm) the effect of the gas phase can usually be ignored, for smaller particles the ambient air can have a pronounced influence. One of the most striking examples of the effect of air was demonstrated in the ...
